A new bridge in Nolalu is a sign of the times.
Bailey bridges once covered countless rivers and streams throughout the region. Developed by army engineers during the Second World War, the structure was cheap, tough and didn't require special tools.
But now the Bailey Bridge that crosses the Whitefish River on Old Mill Road is being replaced.
Larry Bockus, who is on the local roads board for nearby Marks township, said its part of a program to replace the Bailey Bridges that once were so popular.
"They're almost a historic relic now," he said.
Around five years ago the bridge had load restrictions placed on it, which meant detours for people in the southern part of Lybster Township.
"That was causing hardship more than anything," Bockus said.
Crews were busy building the new 31-metre steel-decked modular bridge Tuesday.
The Ministry of Transportation said the new bridge will be capable of carrying full highway loads. The total cost of the project is $662,000. Construction is expected to wrap up by the end of the month.
