NOLALU – Fire crews were busy responding to two structural fires overlapping each other in Strange Township.
According to Nolalu Fire Rescue and First Response, fire crews responded to a fully-involved garage fire Thursday around 2 p.m., and while in the process of fighting one fire a second fire broke out at Black Ash Resort.
Nolalu fire chief Sarah Shoemaker said luckily, fire crews were already in the clean-up stage.
“We had, luckily, finished the main firefighting at [the garage] fire. We were in the clean stage,” Shoemaker said.
“We were doing some overhaul and we got a page out for a second fire at a cabin.”
Fire crews from both Nolalu and Gillies Fire Rescue responded to the cabin fire at Black Ash Resort.
Shoemaker said a man was inside sleeping at the time of the fire, and with no smoke alarms in the cabin he had woken up to the smell of smoke filling the cabin and managed to get out safely. The cabin was fully engulfed when fire crews arrived and a nearby trailer sustained some damage to the windows due to heat exposure.
Fire officials said the two fires do not appear to be connected at this time and they are currently under investigation.
