THUNDER BAY -- A fixture in the building supply, hardware and home renovation business in Thunder Bay will close its doors this summer.

Saying only that it was "a business decision," North American Lumber announced Tuesday that it plans to shut down operations at its Miles and Vickers Street location at the end of August.

Eleven full-time workers will lose their jobs.

A spokesperson said the Thunder Bay store, right across from the Fort William Gardens, has operated there under different names since the 1930s, but North American Lumber has been at the location for over 50 years.

In a news release, the company said it gave its staff as much notice as possible "so that they will be able to make future plans."

Employees have been asked to stay on to help sell off remaining inventory.

North American Lumber is also closing its branch in Weyburn, Saskatchewan.

The company says all other branches will remain open.

The chain includes Fort Frances and several communities in Manitoba and Saskatchewan.
