THUNDER BAY – An apartment in the Academy area sustained heavy smoke damage, but avoided significant structural damage, after firefighters doused a fire on Sherrington Drive on Friday evening.

The tenant of the apartment was taken to hospital for observation for smoke inhalation, but no further injuries were reported.

Thunder Bay Fire Rescue was called to a 48-unit apartment on the short street, off of Fulton Boulevard, around 6 p.m.

The officer of the first arriving pumper reported black smoke emerging from a fourth floor apartment, the TBFR said in a release.

A second alarm was called, with a total of six pumper trucks, an aerial ladder, and a command unit ultimately responding.

Firefighters encountered light smoke in the fourth floor hallway, finding heavy, thick black smoke after making entry into the apartment.

Crews used a thermal imaging camera to quickly identify the source of the fire, and the TBFR reported it was rapidly brought under control.

“The apartment sustained heavy smoke damage but structural damage was kept to a minimum,” the agency said.

The fire remains under investigation, the TBFR said Friday night.

It department also issued a reminder to the public that working, up-to-date smoke detectors save lives.
