NDP Media Release
OTTAWA – Despite repeated promises to the contrary, the Liberal Government has announced that it is planning to implement Stephen Harper’s cuts to health care.
The NDP is calling on the Liberals to reverse course on health care cuts.
“We regularly see people slipping through the cracks in health care in the North, especially our growing numbers of seniors,” said MP Charlie Angus (Timmins-James Bay), “We know regions like Northern Ontario are going to get squeezed by these cuts, so it is important to get people in the north speaking up.”
Federal health care spending is projected to shrink from 6% to 3% cutting $1.1 billion out of the health care system in the next year alone. Rural and northern regions will certainly feel the impacts of the Trudeau government walkaway on public health care.
“The Liberals promised Canadians that they would invest billions more in health care. We are asking the Liberals to work with New Democrats instead of going ahead with Conservative cuts to health care, ” added Don Davies, NDP Health Critic.
The Liberal Government’s plan to implement Harper’s cut to health care is putting significant strain on the negotiations between Canada and the provinces on a health care deal for Canadians. Fixing health care remains a top priority for the NDP as they roll out a new campaign in defence of Canada’s public healthcare system.
