THUNDER BAY -- A severe over-population of dogs at a Northern First Nation led to a unique rescue mission this week.
Multiple organizations from across the province teamed up to help after the situation first came to light. After receiving a call from the Whitefish Bay First Nation near Kenora, the Ontario Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals made the long drive from Toronto to rescue more than 70 dogs.
The team was on site for a couple of days, gathering the animals, most of which were running free. From there, they were transported to the Thunder Bay International Airport where vets and volunteers began cleaning, inspecting, and immunizing the dogs.
It's a difficult and time intensive mission. But for officials working with the animals, they say it's all worth it.
The dogs flew out of town Friday morning, en-route to Southern Ontario, where they will find new homes.
