MONCTON, N.B. – Ron Rosengren remains at .500 after picking up a win and a loss on Wednesday at the Canadian senior men’s curling championship in Moncton, N.B.
Down 5-2 after five ends to Quebec’s Robert Desjardins, Team Northern Ontario scored one in the sixth, then stole three in the seventh and went on to edge their opponent 7-6 in an extra end.
Rosengren, Gary Maunula, Dale Wiersema and Bill Peloza weren’t so fortunate in their second game of the day.
Taking on host New Brunswick’s Grant Odishaw, the Thunder Bay rink gave up a steal of one in the second end and trailed 2-0, then, after cutting the lead in half in the fourth, gave up one in the fifth and a steal of one in the sixth.
They’d go on to drop the match 4-1.
Rosengren, relegated to the seeding pool at the end of the round-robin, takes on the Northwest Territories and Yukon on Thursday, the two teams with a combined 1-11 record to date at senior nationals.
Northern Ontario finished tied for f with Ontario’s Howard Rajala, but lost the tiebreaker and did not advance to the championship pool. Odishaw’s New Brunswick rink won the Pool A standings at 5-1. Quebec wound up second, tied with Alberta.
On the women’s side, Kenora’s Lori Hoppe also finished 3-3, beating Newfoundland and Labrador 7-2 on Wednesday morning and capping her day with a 8-7 win over Manitoba to advance to the championshp round.
Hoppe, third Shannon Grown, second Lisa Penner and lead Jacqueline Ortlieb will take on British Columbia and Alberta on Thursday.
