THUNDER BAY - Northern Ontario will see more than 60 new resident doctors practicing medicine in the region.

According to the Northern Ontario School of Medicine, 64 resident doctors who have recently graduated from NOSM or other Canadian medical schools, will be practicing medicine under the supervision of a licensed physician.

“This group of resident doctors are some of the best and brightest, and we are honoured to have them join the Northern Ontario School of Medicine,” said Dr. Robert Anderson, NOSM’s Associate Dean, Postgraduate Medical Education.

“Residency is one of the most critical times in the development of a physician’s professional identity, and we are excited to help them not only become great doctors but to standout in their field and become change leaders who will create real, lasting impact in communities across Northern Ontario."

The new doctors will be working throughout 12 communities in Northern Ontario. Patients in the region may receive care from these doctors and NOSM is asking the public to offer them a warm welcome.

“Resident doctors are essential to health-care delivery in Northern Ontario,” said Dr. Sarita Verma, NOSM Dean, President and CEO. “NOSM residents are dedicated to working with patients of all demographics, from infants to the elderly. They deliver health care based on their previous experience and level of training, always with the guidance of a supervising physician.”

The Northern Ontario School of Medicine offers residency programs in areas including family medicine, anaesthesiology, general surgery, internal medicine, orthopaedic surgery, paediatrics, psychiatry, public health, and preventative medicine.

Upon completion of the residency programs, the new physicians can transition to an independent practice.
