KENORA – The Northwestern Health Unit announced 10 new cases of COVID-19 Saturday, the highest daily number in nearly a month.

Eight of the cases were in the health unit’s Kenora region, while the remaining two were in the Sioux Lookout region. Both are large territories including dozens of communities (a full list is available online).

It’s a dramatic increase for the health unit, which reported only 10 total active cases as of Friday, and had announced only 7 new cases over the previous week.

It's the largest single-day announcement for the NWHU since Jan. 9, when 11 new cases were reported.

One individual was in hospital with the virus Friday.

Anyone identified as a contact of the new cases will be reached out to directly, the health unit said.

The health unit rarely provides additional information on new cases, citing privacy concerns.
