KENORA, Ont. — The number of active COVID-19 cases in the Kenora region continues to mount.

The Northwestern Health Unit reports 22 new cases Wednesday, bringing the active case count in the Kenora region to 85.

That part of the NWHU's service area has the great majority of the health unit's 89 current active cases.

In the face of the increasingly serious situation,  medical officer of health Dr. Kit Young Hoon on Tuesday issued an order that allows for greater enforcement of COVID-19 self isolation requirements.

The order, which came into effect this morning, provides for fines up to $5,000 for failure to comply.

The NWHU has attributed the rise in cases to an outbreak but has not publicly identified the location.

Last week, Wabaseemoong First Nation Chief Waylon Scott announced "a high number of confirmed cases" in his community, and declared a strict lockdown.

Chief Scott asked members of the community to respect the lockdown measures and the work of the crews assigned to checkpoints.
