NorWest Arena remains closed as repairs continue

There has been no change change to the situation at the NorWest Arena.

There has been no change change to the situation at the NorWest Arena.

Oliver Paipoonge Mayor Lucy Kloosterhaus says as of this morning the arena remains closed and testing has determined low levels of ammonia are still present in the compressor room.

Originally the goal was to re-open by Friday night or Saturday morning, but that might not be possible as repairs continue.
Kloosterhaus says until the leak is fully repaired the arena will stay closed for safety reasons.

Thunder Bay Fire and Rescue and Oliver Paipoonge Fire and Emergency Services crews responded to a call about an ammonia leak at the arena on Highway 588. A rink attended working an 11 a.m. Wednesday shift alerted fire crews about the leak.

The chemical that leaked is a key component in ice making.

Work crews from Winnipeg have been brought in to try and fix the problem.
