BARWICK, Ont. — The operator of an oriented strand board mill at Barwick, west of Fort Frances, has received a $65,000 fine in connection with an industrial accident in which an employee was injured.
The incident happened when a machine activated unexpectedly at the Norbord Inc. mill in October 2018.
The Ontario labour ministry charged the company under the Occupational Health and Safety Act.
It determined that there were no guards in place to prevent access by workers to the hazardous moving parts of a machine that automatically applies strapping to bundles of OSB prior to their shipment.
Norbord pleaded guilty in Fort Frances court last week.
In addition to the $65,000 fine, the court imposed a 25 per cent victim fine surcharge as required by the Provincial Offences Act.
The surcharge is credited to a special government fund to assist victims of crime.
