THUNDER BAY - Local athletes brought back plenty of hardware from this month's Under 16 and Under 18 Canadian Track and Field Championships in Sherbrooke, Que.

Lyndsey Gerry and Kate Clouthier captured silver in the U16 sprint relay, while Sarah McChristie won bronze in the U18 women's triple jump.

Gerry also finished sixth in the 200-metre hurdle final and Sara Clouthier was seventh in the U18 400-metre final.

In order to qualify, eight Lakehead Track and Field athletes had to place first or second at the provincial team trial selections last month, and coach Joe McDonough said just making the Manitoba-Northwestern Ontario team in itself was an accomplishment.

"We are incredibly proud of our Lakehead athletes that represent the provincial team this past weekend at the 2022 U16/U18 Legion Canadian Track & Field Championships -- in their first outdoor season in over 2-years, the group managed to bring home three medals and 10 top-15 finishes," McDonough said.

Jumping coach Kyle McGillivray, who mentors McChristie, said she's worked hard to get to this level.

"Sarah has had a great season. She improved her triple jump by a metre and a half, and to have it culminate with a national medal is a testament to her hard work and dedication. I’m so proud of her performance at nationals and can’t wait to see what she’ll do next," he said.
