Occasional Teachers in Thunder Bay are the only teachers left in the province of Ontario who don't have a collective agreement for the 2014-2017 contract period.

THUNDER BAY – With no collective agreement for 2014-2017 contract period, the Catholic School Board and it's 350 occasional supply teachers are heading back to the bargaining table.

In an effort to resolve the situation, negotiations will resume May 8 between the Thunder Bay Catholic District School Board and the Ontario English Catholic Teachers Association.

In a release issued Friday, OECTA Occassional Teacher Unit president Aldo Grillo said there are less than four months in the three-year contract.

“Occasional teachers work in all of the elementary and secondary catholic schools in Thunder Bay and the terms of the current agreement expired on August 31, 2014,” Grillo said.

“So far, over a two-year period, we have met five times and we have been progressing very slowly toward a settlement. There remain just a few significant issues that need to be addressed.”

Grillo added they are prepared to work all day and night for a fair deal to be made.

The Thunder Bay Catholic District School Board reached a 2014-2017 contract settlement with its high school teachers in April and the Board settled with its elementary school teachers in February after more than six months of labour unrest.

“This is the last teacher contract in the whole province, it needs to get done when you are the very last one it is easy to see what needs to be updated to make it comparable to the other teacher contracts in the province.”
