THUNDER BAY -- The Thunder Bay District Health Unit says another person has died as the result of complications from COVID-19.

The health unit on Monday announced the new death, the region's 54th since the pandemic began, along with just nine new cases.

With 28 more cases considered resolved, the district is down to 163 active COVID-19 cases, the lowest number since Feb. 16, when there were 159. The nine new cases, which comprise totals reported on Sunday and Monday, are the lowest two-day total since Jan. 1 and Jan. 2, when there were seven cases reported over the two-day span.

Three of the new cases are considered close contact, while two are household contact, one is unknown in origin and three are still under investigation.

The district has now reported 2,918 COVID cases since last March, with 2,701 considered resolved.

Thunder Bay District's seven-day, per-100,000 case count dropped to 78.03, the lowest it's been since Feb. 14, when it was 76.7.
