One person dead in Highway 17 collision near Dryden

DRYDEN,Ont. — Ontario Provincial Police say one person died in a two-vehicle collision on Highway 17 in Southworth Township.

The collision forced the indefinite closure of the highway between Highway 622 and Highway 72.

Police said the victim was a passenger in a mini-van that came into collision with an SUV about 30 kilometres east of Dryden at about 12:10 p.m. EDT.

Two other occupants of the mini-van suffered unknown injuries.

The driver of the SUV was transported to Thunder Bay for treatment of unknown injuries.

OPP tweeted a photo from the scene showing an Ornge air ambulance which landed on the highway.

An ambulance from Dryden and the Wabigoon Volunteer Fire Department also responded to the collision.

According to a post on the Wabigoon Fire Department's Facebook page, the collision was head-on.

It also said OPP had estimated the highway would likely be closed in both directions until at least 7 PM EDT.
