THUNDER BAY -- The province has announced a 25 per cent tax credit for farmers who donate to Ontario Community Food banks.

Farmers and food bank officials see this as a historic move in Ontario. The announcement also comes as the Regional Food Distribution Association launches its annual Harvest for Hunger food drive.

This year, Safeway has teamed up with the RFDA to make $5 and $10 food donation packs available.

However, RFDA Executive Director Volker Kromm says they need more than just non-perishables. Fresh food donations are also of great importance to area food banks, highlighting why Thursday’s announcement is so important.

Kromm says over the past five years the donations from farmers has gone from almost non-existent to significant, and will likely improve with the new tax credit.
