THUNDER BAY - The province of Ontario is reporting 700 new COVID-19 cases on Monday, the highest single day increase since the beginning of the pandemic.

This latest spike in cases brings the total number of positive COVID-19 tests in Ontario to 50,531. The previous highest daily number of new cases was 634 on April 22.

The majority of new cases are in Southern Ontario, with 344 in Toronto, 104 in Peel, 89 in Ottawa, and 56 in York region.

According to Minister of Health Christine Elliott, 60 per cent of new cases are in people under the age of 40.

The province has seen a surge in COVID-19 cases in the past several weeks, with numbers steadily climbing to more than 400 new daily cases.

As a result of the increase in cases, last week the provincial government has instituted new restrictions province wide, including bars and restaurants no longer being permitted to serve alcohol past 12 a.m. and the closure of strip clubs.

Premier Doug Ford and Elliott will be hold a daily media briefing Monday at 1 p.m.
