TORONTO – The province of Ontario broke its single-day COVID-19 case record for the second straight day Sunday, topping 1,000 new cases for the first time.

Health Minister Christine Elliott announced a total of 1,042 confirmed cases Sunday morning, with a total of 38,769 tests completed the day before.

Those results shattered the previous record of 978 set on Saturday, and brought the province's seven-day average to 857, also a new record.

Over three quarters of Sunday's total cases came from just four districts: Toronto (309), Peel (289), York Region (117), and Ottawa (80).

The province reported 278 people hospitalized with the disease as of Sunday, with 79 in intensive care and 54 on a ventilator.

COVID-19 has claimed the lives of 3,093 Ontarians, with over 230 of those deaths occurring in October.

Sunday's numbers bring Ontario's total cumulative cases to 70,373, with 60,160 resolved.
