Reports of its death were exaggerated, because the Slovak Legion is open for business.
The Royal Canadian Legion Slovak Branch 129 on Atlantic Avenue has been fielding calls daily for about a month about the organization’s closure.
“Recently a lot of rumours were put out into our community stating we have sold or are closed or we went bankrupt,” legion president Robin Stejskal said Friday.
“We want to assure all of Thunder Bay that we are open for business and we’re actually excited for this year.”
The Legion wanted to clear the air because the rumours are so consistent, it was hurting their upcoming events.
“Like other organizations, through the months of January or March, it is a slow time so have there been cost-cutting measures? Yes, there have been,” Stejskal said.
However, the legion’s busy season is coming up and the 77-year-old institution has events already booked for 2014.
The Slovak Legion has more than 300 members and with almost 80 years of history, there are a lot of memories attached to the organization.
“The Royal Canadian Legion is to remember our veterans. That’s first and foremost,” said Stejskal. “The actual branch has been host to all different types of events from weddings to Christmas parties.”
There aren’t many people in the community who haven’t attended an event at the legion, he added.
Upcoming events include a Good Friday fish and chips dinner, a Parents Expo on April 13 and an open house on June 16.
