Local children can finally take a dip in the city’s outdoor pools, which opened Tuesday afternoon.

Late spring storms and cooler temperatures made it impossible for the city to do repairs at Dease, Heath Park and Widnall Pools earlier this year, which delayed the summer pool season.

Fiberglass had to be redone, pool bottoms needed to be painted and structural inspections needed to be complete, most of which depends on weather.

“It was one delay after another,” city facility services manager Mike Sandrin said Tuesday.

But with the repairs finally done and a water inspection at the pools done Tuesday, the pools were opened almost as soon as they were complete. Sandrin thanked his staff and health unit for the quick work they were able to do.

“And I just apologize to the kids they missed out on a weekend but their health and safety is more of a concern than swimming,” Sandrin said.
