THUNDER BAY -- The company proposing to install a new high-voltage power line between Thunder Bay and Wawa will host an open house in the city today.

NextBridge is working on a route for the 450-kilometre-long East-West Tie Line, a double-circuit 230 kilovolt line which is aimed at improving the reliability of electricity service in northwestern Ontario.

The power line was included as a priority project in the Ontario government's 2010 long-term energy plan.

The target in-service date is 2020.

In general, NextBridge says, the proposed route parallels an existing transmission line corridor but avoids some sensitive features crossed by the existing line, including Pukaskwa National Park. The new line also swings north to pass near the community of White River.

Today's open house to update the public and obtain feedback is scheduled for 4 pm to 8 pm at the Current River Community Centre.  Other open houses will be held this week in various north shore communities.
