Thunder Bay - The popular Open Streets event will not be going ahead in Thunder Bay this year.

Officials from Eco-Superior say they just weren't able to secure the funding needed, to make it happen again.

Open Streets was held twice in 2014 and once in 2015, and saw a portion of either Algoma Street or Court Street closed off to vehicles.

The event was meant to encourage walking, cycling, and other healthy modes of transportation, while bringing foot traffic to the businesses in the downtown North Core.

Program Coordinator Ashley Priem says they were hoping for an Ontario Trillium grant to pay for this year's event, but it didn't come through.

She says despite the setback this year, it still considers Open Streets a big hit, which may come back next year.
