The President of Ontario Power Generation was in Thunder Bay to help make the Mission Island Marsh Conservation Area a little greener.

Tom Mitchell was on hand at the marsh Thursday to celebrate the 14 new trees recently planted in the area, thanks to a donation from OPG. The Lakehead Region Conservation Authority added seven red maple trees and seven paper birch trees in May to a grove of greenery near the pavilion.

Over the years, OPG has donated more than $90,000 to help with the development of the conservation area. LRCA chair Bill Bartley says the new trees will help to erase some of the carbon footprint left in the Mission Marsh area from a previous landfill.

OPG also funded a new interpretative display panel this spring, which has been installed on the viewing mound overlooking the marsh.
