OPP officers heading into the second week of a major campaign that targets distracted drivers.
The OPP launched its Phone in one Hand, Ticket in the Other distracted driving campaign. Officers will be monitoring Ontario roads and highways and charging motorists who do not comply with the distracted driving legislation.
During week one, which was held in May, officers throughout the province laid more than 1,600 highway traffic charges. This time around, police are ramping up enforcement efforts – pulling over drivers who exhibit careless driving, such as eating, adjusting the radio and talking on a cell phone while behind the wheel.
Using a cell phone while behind the wheel can result in a $155 fine.
The campaign runs from July 11th to July 17.
