OPP Media Release

(SIOUX LOOKOUT, ON)  The Sioux Lookout Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) and the Canadian National Railway Police Service are committed to ensuring the safety of our pedestrians.

The OPP and CN Police will be stepping up enforcement in Sioux Lookout to increase public safety and promote awareness

The only safe place to cross is at a designated public crossing with either a cross buck, flashing red lights or a gate.

If you cross at any other place, you are trespassing and could be subject to a fine of $125 under Section 26.1 of the Railway Safety Act.

You may also be charged criminally.  Please be aware of this to avoid a ticket, and more importantly, potential injury or death.

Safety Tips:

  • Railroad tracks, trestles, yards and equipment are private property and trespassers are subject to arrest and fines.
  • It can take a mile or more to stop a train, so an engineer who suddenly sees someone on the tracks will be unable to stop in time.  Trains do not follow set schedules, and may come from either direction.
  • Trains overhang the tracks by at least three feet in both directions; if you are next to the tracks, you can be hit by the train.
  • Do not hunt or fish from railroad trestles.  There is only enough clearance on the tracks for a train to pass.  Trestles are not meant to be sidewalks or pedestrian bridges.

If you see pedestrians placing themselves in harm’s way, please call the Ontario Provincial Police at 1-888-310-1122 or CN Police Service Emergency 1-800-465-9239.
