NEEBING — A program that allows homeowners and businesses to let police know if they have security cameras on their premises is being expanded to the Municipality of Neebing.

Ontario Provincial Police are encouraging participation in the CAMSafe initiative, a program that creates a database of security cameras in a community.

When police investigate a crime in the area, they can check the database to learn which properties have cameras, but cannot access the video without permission of the owner.

They must first contact the owner and make a request to see the camera footage.

Interested members of the public, and business owners, are only required to provide basic contact information and the location of their cameras.

Participants can view their own information, change it, or delete their account at any time.

More information is available online.

The OPP already has CAMSafe programs in operation in Nipigon, Kenora, Dryden, Ignace and Sioux Lookout.

The Thunder Bay Police Service operates a similar system, with 103 homes and 33 businesses registered as of May 2025.
