KENORA, Ont. — Ontario Provincial Police say a video posted to social media that implied there was a shooting incident in the downtown area of Kenora was fake.

Now they're trying to identify the perpetrator, who could face a charge of public mischief.

The video started circulating online Monday evening.

It showed OPP outside a local retail business.

The sound of what seemed to be multiple gunshots could be heard in the background.

Officers had been dispatched to that area on a routine call, but no shots were fired.

Constable Jason Canfield said someone obtained video of the incident, then manipulated it by adding audio from another source.

Several Kenora residents have criticized the unidentified individual who was responsible for causing unnecessary alarm in the community.

Canfield said "A lot of people who watched that video may have had loved ones uptown or working uptown, and they would have been concerned for their safety."

He said OPP are still waiting to talk to one person who may be connected to the incident, but the investigation is ongoing.
