OPP investigate online Atikokan bomb threat

The threat was made during an online council meeting.

ATIKOKAN, Ont. — Ontario Provincial Police are continuing to investigate an incident in which someone announced a bomb threat during an online Atikokan town council meeting.

The incident occurred last week, but details have only just been released.

OPP say that at 10:25 a.m. on June 25, an unknown male gained access to the online meeting and made a threat against the Atikokan municipal offices.

Police immediately conducted a threat assessment involving various resources including the OPP Northwest Region Explosive Disposal Unit and the Northwest Region Crime Unit.

OPP say the information gathered during the assessment resulted in a decision to do a localized response, and Atikokan officers took action to ensure safety and security of the builidng.

Police worked with the Town of Atikokan, the fire department and the paramedic service to ensure precautions were in place to maintain a safe perimeter during the followup.

The investigation continues with the involvement of the OPP Digital Evidence Unit.
