THUNDER BAY — Thunder Bay Ontario Provincial Police are issuing a reminder to snowmobilers after officers spent the weekend conducting snowmobile patrols in various areas.

OPP and conservation officers with the Ministry of Natural Resources and Forestry conducted joint patrols on Tease Lake, Walotka Lake, Sturge Lake and Lake Superior on Saturday, March 6 and Sunday, March 7, according to a police news release.

As a result, officers laid 28 provincial offence notices, a three-day suspension for WARN range on an approved screening device and 70 motorized snow vehicle and off-road vehicle warnings for various violations.

Police say the majority of offences were individuals operating motorized snow vehicles without helmets, having an open container of liquor other than on licensed premises, residence or private place, driving with no insurance, and failing to apply for a permit on becoming the owner of a motorized snow vehicle.

OPP is reminding operators and riders to exercise caution when operating motorized snow vehicles and off-road vehicles to prevent injuries or death.
