THUNDER BAY — Just days after OPP reported a dramatic increase in traffic offences in Northwestern Ontario, the Victoria Day holiday weekend saw multiple motorists charged with stunt driving.
Two Thunder Bay residents, a citizen of Russia, and a person from Atikokan were all charged with driving well over the posted speed limit.
The worst incident involved a 20-year-old man from Russia who was clocked at 160 kilometres an hour in a posted 90 km/h section of Highway 11/17.
In another instance, a 29-year-old woman from Thunder Bay was caught driving 147 km/h in a 90 km/h zone.
A 34-year-old Atikokan man was charged for doing 140 km/h in a posted 80 km/h zone on Highway 527, and a 45-year-old man from Thunder Bay was clocked at 94 km/h in a 50 km/h zone on Dawson Road.
All four individuals are subject to an immediate 30-day driving suspension and a 14-day vehicle impoundment.
A conviction for stunt driving can result in a fine up to $10,000 (plus the 25 per cent victim surcharge), six demerit points, possible jail time and licence suspension from one to three years.
