THUNDER BAY --  A Thunder Bay OPP officer has been charged with sexual assault in connection with an incident that allegedly took place in the early 2000s.

The province’s special investigations unit on Wednesday issued a release saying they received a complaint about a sexual assault against the officer against a woman between April 2001 and March 2002.

As a result, Const. John Hayes, 43, was charged with a single count of sexual assault.

He will be in court on July 16.

As the matter is before the courts, the SIU says it will make no further comment at this time.
