OPP officer suffered 'serious injuries' in Golf Links Road crash

75-year-old male driver of the civilian vehicle was also injured and transported to hospital for treatment.

THUNDER BAY -- The two-vehicle crash on Golf Links Road caused serious injuries to a provincial police officer.

The province's Special Investigations Unit, which invoked its mandate to probe the collision, confirmed that the passenger in the OPP vehicle and the 75-year-old male driver of the civilian vehicle were injured in the Tuesday morning crash.

In a written news release on Wednesday, the SIU said two officers were in an unmarked provincial police cruiser was travelling northbound on Golf Links Road when it collided with a vehicle that was coming out of the Thunder Bay Regional Health Sciences Centre.

Details about the extent of the injuries were not provided.

The crash resulted in a lengthy closure of Golf Links Road between Oliver Road and Sunrise Boulevard. The road has since been reopened to vehicular traffic.

The SIU has two investigators, two forensic investigators and one collision reconstructionist assigned to the incident. One subject officer and one witness officer have been designated.
