KENORA - Police are asking drivers to slow down and take their time as winter slowly begins to arrive in northwestern Ontario.

Kenora Ontario Provincial Police have seen a dramatic increase in collisions and are asking drivers to plan ahead, take their time and drive carefully as road conditions begin to deteriorate as colder weather arrives.

"Speed is usually the main factor, people get complacent in a usual route and a usual speed, but snow changes everything," OPP Cst. Jason Canfield said in an email.

Police are also encouraging motorists to use winter tires for proper road surface traction. On Wednesday, Kenora OPP said they had six motor vehicle collisions reported since 7 a.m.

Police also responded to nine collisions last week over four days.
