(MARATHON, ON)- On September 19, 2016 at approximately 9:30pm, the Ontario Provincial Police in Marathon was contacted regarding a 68 year-old male stranded on an island on White Lake near White Lake Provincial Park.
Investigation revealed that the male, along with three others, were on vacation near White Lake.
Repeated phone calls to the stranded male were unsuccessful and OPP was unable to determine how many people were stranded. Further, at least one person on the vacation was identified as having poor overall health.
There was also no indication as to where the stranded male was located on the large body of water.
Members of the Marathon detachment along with the assistance of the Marathon OPP Marine Unit searched White Lake Provincial Park.
OPP was able to locate two of the four people on vacation.
OPP was advised the two males had not returned from their boat ride.
The north portion of White Lake was identified as the portion to search. An OPP marine vessel was deployed on Lake Superior, travelling to White Lake. Several hours later, the two stranded males were located near Clay Bay.
Both men were found to be cold, but uninjured. The vessel they were operating had mechanical issues, and had taken on water due to inclement weather.
Both males were transported to land and medical attention was not required.
OPP reminds the public to take the necessary precautions needed to ensure safe boating and a safe return to shore.
