OPP applying heavy presence in search for gas thief

The suspect, described by witnesses as a thin white male, abandoned his vehicle on Highway 17 after stealing gas in Thunder Bay.

SCHREIBER, Ont. - Provincial police are searching for a male who allegedly stole gas in Thunder Bay, fled from police on Highway 17, and left his vehicle abandoned on the side of the highway.

On Saturday at approximately 12 p.m., officers of the Nipigon OPP were advised of a gas theft in Thunder Bay. The vehicle resembling the description in the theft was later observed on Highway 17 near Schreiber.

When police located the vehicle, the driver fled. Shortly after, the vehicle was abandoned on the south side of Highway 17, east of Schreiber.

Witnesses describe the driver as a thin white male, approximately 16-to-22 years old, with short brown hair, wearing a white t-shirt with horizontal black stripes, long black pants, and white sneakers.

OPP Emergency Response Team are now on scene as well as air support units (helicopter), K9, and other ground support officers.

The public is asked not to pick up hitch hikers in the Schreiber and Terrace Bay area, and to call police if noting anything out of the ordinary or suspicious
