PICKLE LAKE, Ont. – Ontario Provincial Police are seeking to identify a motorist who fatally struck a dog, and narrowly missed hitting three people, along Highway 599 near Mishkeegogamang Ojibway Nation, about 250 kilometres northeast of Ignace.

Police report a black pick-up truck was travelling southbound on Highway 599 between Ace Lake and Mishkeegogamang "when it swerved to hit a dog and almost hit three people walking on the highway."

The dog died as a result of its injuries.

Police believe the act to have been intentional, said OPP Acting Sergeant Jim Davis.

"Witnesses observed the vehicle swerve in the direction of the dog and believe it was done on purpose," he said Friday.

The OPP's Pickle Lake detachment responded to a complaint over the incident on July 19, but are now asking for public assistance in identifying the driver.

Investigators had not yet been able to confirm whether the driver may have been known to anyone involved, Davis said.

The OPP are asking anyone with information about the incident to contact police at 1-888-310-1122. Anonymous tips can be submitted through Crimestoppers at 1-800-222-8477 or online at their website.
