FORT FRANCES, Ont. - Police are warning retailers and members of the public in Fort Frances about counterfeit money circulating in the community. The Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) detachment in Fort Frances has responded to three separate incidents involving fake fifty dollar bills in the past week.

Police say the counterfeit bills share certain characteristics that should give them away on closer inspection: they are made from thick paper rather than polymer; the translucent plastic on the bills is just tape; the top right corner on the face side of the bill has harsh marks or is cut off; and the maple leaf on the left side is neither translucent nor a hologram.

In a release, police asked residents in the area to use caution when accepting fifty dollar bills. You can learn more about security features on the bills at the Bank of Canada's website.
