Serving the community took on a whole new meaning for local police officers on Monday.

Members of the Thunder Bay Police Service, OPP, MNR and corrections were busy taking orders at both Thunder Bay Boston Pizza locations as part of Police Serving You, a fundraiser for the Special Olympics. Law Enforcement Torch Runs around the world raise more than $40 million every year for Special Olympic events.

“I think they’re doing a great job,” OPP Sgt. Shelley Garr said as officers hurried by with food and drinks in hand at the Boston Pizza on Memorial Avenue. “They’re doing their best anyway.”

Garr said some patrons were surprised when officers showed up at their table but had a good laugh when they realized police were only there to serve them.

“It’s good,” she said. “It’s all in fun.”

The day is one of several events local police host to support the Special Olympics including the Father’s Day Run at Boulevard Lake and the Polar Bear Plunge.

“It’s just a cause that’s dear to our hearts,” Garr said.

Along with lunch, police will also be serving dinner at Boston Pizza throughout Monday evening.
