THUNDER BAY — Local organizations have partnered up to close the gap in transgender healthcare.
NorWest Community Health Centres, Foria Clinic, and Dr. Francois Doiron announced last week that they would collaborate to broaden gender-affirming care services in the Thunder Bay region following the closure of Umbrella Medical Clinic.
The expansion of gender-affirming care aligns with the mission of all three organizations to foster a healthier, more equitable community.
Dr. Kate Greenaway is excited to enter into this collaboration with NorWest and Dr. Dorion to deliver life-saving care to the Thunder Bay region.
“I am proud of Foria Clinic, and I am confident that it will benefit many people who need safe and responsive virtual gender-affirming care. I hope that this is just a first step in a long and fruitful partnership,” said Dr. Greenaway, medical director of Foria Clinic.
NorWest already offers gender-affirming care services, but this new collaboration presents an opportunity to expand and enhance these essential services for the community, a joint media release said.
Together, the organizations will welcome and ensure a smooth transition of care for individuals in Northwestern Ontario who are seeking gender-affirming services.
NorWest employees are pleased to work alongside Dr. Doiron and Foria Clinic to enhance and expand gender-affirming care services in the region.
“This collaboration underscores our commitment to providing accessible and affirming health care for all members of our community,” said Juanita Lawson, CEO at NorWest.
NorWest, Foria Clinic and Dr. Doiron’s expertise provide a comprehensive range of gender-affirming care services, the release said.
Dr. Doiron said collaborating with NorWest and Foria Clinic is a pivotal moment in his commitment to gender-affirming care.
“Together, we’re not just filling gaps but crafting a continuum of support that embraces and empowers our gender-diverse community,” Dr. Doiron said.
Counselling and support groups for individuals, their partners and family members are available.
NorWest also offers education, sexual health and screening, medical support during transition for transgender clients, access to telemedicine for long-distance appointments and reproductive care.
Services are provided at NorWest for those seeking specialized assistance for transgendered care from Northwestern Ontario.
The integrated approach will prioritize clients' well-being, the release said. This will foster a supportive and inclusive environment for everyone in need of gender-affirming care.
NorWest, Foria Clinic, and Dr. Doiron are committed to maintaining the highest standards of care and fostering an environment that respects and celebrates the diversity of all individuals seeking gender-affirming care.
