THUNDER BAY – A COVID-19 outbreak at St. Joseph’s Hospital has been declared over, just a week after it was first announced.

The Thunder Bay District Health Unit reported the end of the outbreak impacting the hospital’s 1 East-Mental Health Rehabilitation wing on Sunday.

It had first announced the outbreak on April 4, after two cases were identified among individuals associated with the facility, and transmission was determined to have occurred there.

Provincial guidelines define a hospital outbreak as two or more confirmed cases within a specified area within 14 days, where both could reasonably have been acquired in hospital.

“Prior to the outbreak, significant measures were already in place at St. Joseph’s Hospital to reduce likelihood of transmission of the virus within the facility,” the health unit said in a statement Sunday. “Expanded precautions were implemented for the duration of the outbreak.”
