The owners of Kam River Farms, who lost nearly half their herd of cattle in a barn fire, say they have been overwhelmed by the community’s support.
Peter Aalbers says 128 cattle died out of 260 during the fire late last week. Now, the owners are faced with rebuilding.
“On Saturday, we got the OK from the insurance and from the ministry to remove our animals and bury them,” Aalbers said during an interview with CKPR Radio.
“And that is a good thing, because the smell from the animals becomes a health hazard.”
Meanwhile, daughter Trudy Reid says the fire last week has shown what their neighbours are really like.
“This community of Thunder Bay works very hard together when tragedy strikes,” she said. “Everybody is there to help you no matter what business you are in. People help in different ways and the support is just overwhelming.”
