The owner of Atikokan's Quetico centre is looking for a new owner, and is hoping to find someone with the right business idea.
John Barrett purchased the property in 2006 to save it from becoming a trailer park. But now Barrett says he is looking for someone to use it in a similar way as it was in the before he became the owner.
“I would prefer to have somebody who would operate it in a low impact environment, especially on the lake,” he said during an interview with CKPR Radio. “I want somebody who will have a positive influence on the property as it was used in the past.”
He added that he wants to ensure that the property’s use remains a benefit to both Atikokan and the region.
Atikokan Mayor Dennis Brown said the town would greatly benefit from the re-establishment of an Aboriginal training facility.
“I think there’s a need now, with all the mining activity in Northwestern Ontario and across Canada and North American, for a training centre like that,” he said.
Barrett said there is no timetable as to when a sale will be made.
