Two people are in custody following a police pursuit west of Marathon.

Police say that just after 10:30 a.m. Saturday, an OPP officer spotted what was believed to be a stolen black Ford Explorer travelling west bound on Highway 17.

Police say the driver of the SUV accelerated to evade the responding officers.

Officers successfully deployed a spike belt, however the vehicle continued driving.

The pursuit was then discontinued for the safety of the public.

The SUV was found abandoned on a remote side road shortly thereafter, and police were able to track down the two suspects using a K-9 unit.

Natalie Lafortune, 29, of Barrie and James Canning, 31, of Owen Sound, now face various related charges.

The pair has since been transferred to the Thunder Bay district jail, were they'll be held until their court date.
