Pair charged with defrauding Superior North Catholic School Board

SCHREIBER, Ont. — Ontario Provincial Police have laid criminal charges against the former director of the Superior North Catholic District School Board, and a former manager with the board.

OPP announced In a news release Wednesday that 57-year-old Mary Alexa McKinnon and 55-year-old Rodney McKinnon, both of Terrace Bay, were arrested and charged with Fraud over $5,000 and Breach of Trust.

Both accused are scheduled to appear in court in Schreiber on July 12.

Few details of the case were disclosed, but the amount of money involved in the alleged fraud is over $25,000.

Police said they began an investigation after being contacted in February by school board representatives who reported a fraud by two staff members.

Mary Alexa McKinnon was appointed Director of Education in 2015 after serving as Superintendent of Education with the Kenora Catholic District School Board.

Rodney McKinnon held the position of Supervising Manager of Plant/Facilities and Information Technology with the Superior North board.

In January of this year, the board appointed Barb Spadoni as Acting Director of Education.

Board chair Hugh McCorry issued a brief statement about the case, saying "The trustees take their role in governorship very seriously. When concerns are brought to our attention we immediately address them."

McCorry added "Unfortunately I can't make any other comment as this issue is now before the courts."

The Superior North Catholic board operates schools in nine communities around the north shore and Greenstone.
