MARATHON, Ont. – Two people were sent to hospital with major injuries after a single-vehicle collision Monday evening on Highway 17 east of Marathon.

Ontario Provincial Police, in a release issued on Tuesday morning, said the 80-year-old male driver and 78-year-old female passenger, both from Winnipeg, had to be extracted from their vehicle after it struck a rock cut head on, vaulted across the highway and came to rest in a rock cut in the eastbound ditch.

The travelers were first transported to a local hospital for treatment and then later taken to Thunder Bay Regional Health Sciences Centre.

The incident closed the highway for about six hours. It was then opened to one lane for three hours until the vehicle was removed and clean-up was completed.
