THUNDER BAY — A stretch of Cumberland Street North is now closed to traffic for an extended period.

The City of Thunder Bay put up traffic barriers Tuesday at the intersections with McVicar Street and Howe Street as crews began work on a major infrastructure project, including a new roundabout at Cumberland and Water Street, and new sewer pipes and water mains.

The road and sidewalks in the area will also be fully reconstructed.

Water Street remains open at this time, but all vehicle and pedestrian traffic is restricted within the closed section of Cumberland.

In the coming weeks, the closure will be extended south to Villa Street, and eventually to Tupper Street as the work progresses.

This part of the project won't be completed until October.

City officials are asking motorists and pedestrians to use alternate routes and to follow all posted signage over the coming months.

Work on Cumberland from Tupper to Red River Road is scheduled to take place next year.
