Highway 61 Closure

THUNDER BAY -- Highway 61 closures are coming.

Ontario's Ministry of Transportation has issued an advisory, stating the highway will be partially closed overnight, starting on Monday, between the hours of 10 p.m. and 6:30 a.m. to allow crews to complete restoration work between Neebing Avenue and Broadway Avenue.

The work was started last year, but abandoned when winter weather set in last fall.

The partial closures are expected to continue through mid-June.

A full closure will take place on May 24, with a marked detour provided in both directions.

The MTO said the closures are necessary for the safety of workers while construction is under way.

"We apologize for the inconvenience and urge motorists to schedule their travel to minimize any delays.  Motorists are reminded to obey and follow all traffic signage and flag persons for the safety of both workers and drivers," an MTO spokesperson said in a release.

"For the latest information on highway closures and construction, the public can call 511, MTO’s Road Information Line or check www.511on.ca."
