THUNDER BAY — No one was injured but two vehicles were extensively damaged in a fire at a residence on Strand Avenue on Tuesday morning.

Thunder Bay Fire Rescue says a patrolling police officer alerted the homeowners after spotting a vehicle on fire in a car port.

Firefighters arrived to find a second vehicle also on fire, and were concerned the blaze was spreading to the attached home.

Ultimately eight fire trucks responded to the alarm including six pumpers, an aerial ladder unit and a command truck.

Crews were able to prevent the fire from getting into the house, which suffered minimal exterior damage.

The owner of the home told TBNewswatch the fire was caused by a fault with a block heater.

However, the fire department is again reminding the public to check block heater extension cords to make sure they are in good working order.
