THUNDER BAY – There may not yet be snow on the ground but it’s starting to look like Christmas in Paterson Park.

The Fort William Business District BIA held their annual tree lighting ceremony on Friday night, drawing dozens to the park at the corner of May and Miles streets.

Fort William Business District BIA chairman Jim Hupka said the business owners in the area come together every year to make the event happen.

“It’s just a good, happy start to the Christmas season we enjoy putting on every year,” he said. “It’s a fun, family event people look forward to.”

This is the 21st year for the ceremony, which also includes activities inside the Victoriaville Centre and sleigh rides through the south downtown core.

It’s become a tradition for many.

“The people that started coming are now bringing their children and grandchildren out and enjoying having the lights,” he said.

“There are a lot more kids coming because they talk about it and look forward to it. It’s a night out, we can get them inside to have some hot chocolate and they all love the sleigh rides on the horses.”

Dan Burrell, who toured the park with his 20-month-old son Connor, was at the event for the first time.

He said it has a festive vibe.

“It’s great to see everybody here. It looks like they’re starting to get into the holiday spirit,” he said.
